New Shop Section – Gila Gems

Slowly but surely, I am adding new sections to my shop on Etsy. My Gila Gems line is now open! Take a look at the Gila Gems page at the top of this blog to find out more information.

Besides being inspired by the local beauty of the area in which I live, this is where my jewelry making passion began. When we arrived in Silver City last December, I decided to take an earring making class at a local bead shop (http://abeador2.com). That was it, after taking one simple class, I was hooked! Of course one thing has led to another and here I am making jewelry to sell.

As with my Louisiana Wetlands Treasures line, I am dedicated to using the natural world of the area in which has inspired me. For my Gila Gems line, I will be using local natural stone and the designs of the local native tribes. After a trip to the Grand Canyon and Canyon de Chelly about a month ago, I made the decision to buy a bead loom after visiting with a Navajo woman and her beautiful bead loom necklaces. Her work is shown below.

I will be incorporating designs from a local no longer existent Native tribe – the Mimbres Indians. They are very well-known for the beautiful pottery designs.

Here are a few pieces to start off this new section of my shop…

Summer in the High Desert Mountains

The month of June was miserably hot here in the Burro Mountains. We had bright sun every day and temperatures in the 90s. Yes, the humidity was low but it was still hot. The nights were cooler but sleeping was still uncomfortable during the first half of the night.

All of that changed when “monsoon season” started around the end of June. One day the clear blue skies turned to a few puffy clouds in the sky. Within a few days we had almost completely overcast skies. The next day we had rain for the first time in over a month! From that day on, we had scattered thunderstorms somewhere within viewing distance every day.

By the end of July, things had greened up very nicely here. Sam and I were amazed at how quickly things grew. All of a sudden we had knee-high and then waist-high greenery growing everywhere! We had to pull out the lawnmower and weed eater and clear out an area around the house. We thought we get away without having to cut anything. That thought sure wasn’t correct!

All the rain we received did two things. It made everything around here green up beyond belief and it made it much cooler! Most days are now a comfortable temperature in the 70s or 80s. Along with all the greenery are the numerous wildflowers that have made grand entrances everywhere.

That has made my jewelry making time in my studio much more bearable. I have listed a few more items to the Louisiana Wetlands category.

Very shortly I will be adding a few items to a new category – Gila Gems.

I hope you’ll check out my Etsy site and look forward to a new post in the next day or two.

A Little Bit About Burro Mountain Arts

Picture walking outside your door and being able to see mountain peaks over 20 miles away. I get to do this every morning! When I walk out of my front door to see that magnificent view, I literally walk right into the rays of the sun. The original owner of our hand hewn log cabin poured a magnificent patio on the front end of the house.

My husband and have finally come to rest (for awhile that is) after meandering around North America for the last 3 years. When we arrived in the town of Silver City we knew we had come home. After just a few days we found the house we now live in. After a few months of fixing it up and adding our own touches, it is becoming a home.

One of the things I really liked about this place is that it has a casita or little house just down the hill from the main house. “It would make a great guest house” remarked my husband. I agreed but in the back of my mind I was thinking of how it would make a great studio for doing art work! I now have that studio I’ve always dreamed of having.

This whole area is considered an art community. The small town of Silver has over 30 art galleries. There isn’t a week that goes by that you can’t find some kind of art instruction in the area. For something to do when we first arrived here, I signed up for a jewelry making class. I have to say from the moment on I have been hooked on making jewelry.

But let’s not digress. Where did I leave my thoughts? Walking out that door and viewing all this area has to offer. This is the view from the front patio…

A great variety of wildflowers are in bloom right now with the afternoon showers we’ve been getting.

And do you recognize this one from Georgia O’Keeffe’s flower paintings?

At the end of the day we always have lovely colors to look at with the sunset. Every sunset is different from the other.

One reason for this post is to show you the beauty that surrounds me. The other reason is to show you that I live out in the sticks! So, please be patient on my mailing of orders. I will mail them in 2 to 3 business days – or sooner if I am headed to town on the same day you place your order.

I hope you’ll be back to check for new posts. Consider subscribing so you don’t miss anything! Don’t forget to check back to my shop often to see if I’ve posted any new items.
